Of "The Little Belfry EP", esteemed music writer Aaron Drain of State.IE recently said:

"Drawing on influences like Tom Waits and Neil Young, Sumadh’s use of simple yet elegant chord progressions and understated vocals are reminiscent of the darker folk trends that saw out the ’60s and the Summer of Love for the uncertainty of a new generation. With his band of friends and fellow musicians bolstering the sound, The Little Belfry EP is a uniquely captivating exercise in subdued, emotive song-making...To get acquainted, we heartily recommend the title track and a long, brisk walk through cracked, amber leaves and Autumn skies. Soul food."

While Taylor Johnson of Encore NI had this to say of the lead track "Little Belfry":

"'...feels like a travelling song, one born out of experience and tireless craft. A gentle, swooning verse builds to an almost drunken lullaby, as if 'Little Belfry' was already a timeless Pogues tune. In fact, if you were to swap The Mad Dalton's Dylan-esque delivery for Shane MacGowan's snarl, this could easily have come straight out of the Dublin legends locker. The beautiful acoustic interplay merges effortlessly with the brass section, resulting in a song made for Winter nights, an open fire and more than a few bottles of wine."

Cloak & Dagger (written & composed by The Mad Dalton) I’ve been shadowed by the cloak I’ve been stabbed by the dagger The moon has watched me in my midnight stagger And I’ve had a dream, yeah we’ve all had a dream I’d been kicked like a dog I’ve been fighting tooth & nail I skipped on out the country so I wouldn’t go to jail And I was so afraid, my bed it had been made Take me home – pull me back under the water Take me home – back to that good ol’ waterin’ hole… I’ve heard the sirens wailin’ I’ve heard the beating drum The ghosts sing in city streets w/ crazy things they’ve done And they had a dream yeah it’s all just a dream We’ve been carrying quite a load We’ve poured drinks the whole night through We’ve looked upon the open road & I’ve kept my eye on you And we’re all here still in this place & the moonlight’s shining through… Take me home – pull me back under the water Take me home – back to that illustrious waterin’ hole… I’ve no time to think things over To see if this whim may pass And if you find a four leaf clover that’s been hiding in the grass Go run w/ yer dream, yeah baby run w/ that dream Well I hope that I’ll find virtue Cause I know that I’ve found pain I know that I can’t wait to see that pretty face again And I am not afraid, my bed it has been made… …my penance has been paid…
2.
Little Belfry (written & composed by The Mad Dalton) The nuns threw you out of piano school They couldn’t play by your rules Sometimes yer put in your place You know when yer fallin’ from grace Some wait to talk, while some stop to listen, You look in their eyes all you see is a prison Honey’s still stuck to my sleeve Yer gone but I still believe His bike is still tied to a tree Outside our Little Belfry Father, Son and Holy Ghost I’ll raise my glass & offer this toast ‘Cause love conquers fear makes it all disappear…. Maybe I’ll leave here one day I’ll buy a cheap ticket in May We’ll go to the town of my birth And my secret places on Earth Father, Son and Holy Ghost I’ll raise my glass & offer this toast ‘Cause love conquers fear makes it all disappear…. I’ll see you there at the station Don’t forget yer medication I’ll bring the fire there w/ me Forged in our Little Belfry
3.
Drunkard’s Dream (written & composed by The Mad Dalton) I see you’ve trouble on yer mind But I can get through if you’ll let me here tonight The words you say, they make me feel so unkind Maybe that’s what’s deserving… What’s that you say..? You think I’ve wasted all yer time Baby you once was a true friend of mine… Girl I know that I ain’t easy And you know sometimes, well I’ve had too much to dream They say ‘Stand Up’ they say ‘Sit down’ I can’t take much more of this god-damned town I just wish something would fire up & wake thee… I’ve been so far from home girl forever Wishing a nation would rise up & claim me Babe I’m not asking for you to stop the bleeding Only to wrap my arms around you while we dream Anything that you want Find a way to believe You’ve everything that I want Just find a way…to breathe What’s that you say..? Hope yer not wasting all my time Lift yer head Mama let’s go have a good time…! You don’t wanna’ go back from where once you came No you don’t have to be just like that again Livin’ out here no it really ain’t quite the same You make drunkards smile outside in the rain…
4.
Madge 04:28
Madge (written & composed by The Mad Dalton) That was my girl She was born in 1980 Came to desire Yeah heard of a love, she learned to dream Now that she’s ready She said “Forever, forever’s too bad!” Into the light she goes I called for the best things she never had She didn’t know the way Crazy ‘til her dying day Guess we all end up that way Now she’s a big star Now that the trend is becoming so clear If she’ll take me higher I’d take up the wheel away out of here so cold he’s so cold that way he’s so cold that way, cold that way… We’re just castaway Send us back from where we came We could never play that game That was my girl Flush in the face of her liberty Her strangest desire To step in the fire that’s burnin’ all night so cold, he’s so cold, he’s so cold that way so cold that way, cold that way …that was my girl…!
5.
Farewell (Boy At The Station) (written & composed by The Mad Dalton) You know that I need you & care I can’t find my thoughts anywhere This game is for dreamers & fools Who don’t ever tell you the rules A hushed voice that speaks to my core Yer party dress falls to the floor Under fire still wanting more You know I can’t swim anymore So now my girl, who was once at my side I jumped off too late baby thanks for the ride You left me for broke but I think I survived…this time… The fruits of our labour are song When the words don’t belong It’s clear from the pain & elation We’ve never had this conversation Father Son & Holy Ghost Baby you know that I loved you the most I read you my poems when we travelled to the coast I can’t be that boy at the station Waiting on love & affection I’ll walk the road wild & free There’s someplace that you’d rather be Baby we rocked, But still you did roll Kicked me w/pretty pink shoes right in my soul Yer doctor knows best Guess I didn’t pass the test I wanted to see yer sweet face Before memories took it’s place The end of the road is now here Remember that love conquers fear
